FLUIDS, LOADS AND VEHICLES

In Leyland the Vehicle Is the Traffic and the Product

As resin flooring contractors Leyland manufacturers call on regularly, we specify against fluids and vehicle movement rather than pallet traffic. The town sits at Junction 28 of the M6, with the A582 linking it to Farington and Lostock Hall, and its economy is built on vehicle and component manufacturing and the supply chain around it.

Assembly halls, paint and preparation areas, component production and internal vehicle movement all appear in the same town, and each brings a different exposure.

Hydraulic oil, brake and coolant fluids, solvent-based products, dropped tooling and pneumatic line drops act on floors that also carry line-side racking, jigs and finished vehicles. That combination is what makes the specification here.

WHAT WE ARE CALLED TO IN LEYLAND

Site Types That Need a Fluid-Rated Floor

Assembly Hall Floors

Abrasion under tug and trolley movement with markings that survive a line change.

Component Manufacturing

Press and machine base loads, oil and coolant exposure and swarf abrasion.

Paint and Preparation

Solvent resistance, cleanability and static control where flammables are handled.

Internal Vehicle Areas

Tyre marking resistance, turning wear and grip where wet vehicles come in.

Line-Side Sequencing

Clear demarcation of stock footprints, walkways and internal vehicle routes.

Fuel and Chemical Stores

Chemically resistant, contained and bunded floor detailing throughout.

WHERE PEOPLE MEET MOVING VEHICLES

Demarcation Is Designed, Not Painted On

When the vehicle is both the product and the traffic, segregation stops being housekeeping. The 1992 Workplace Regulations and HSE guidance L24 make marked routes, crossings and exclusion zones a designed element of the floor, and they have to survive a line change.

Routes That Survive

Line changes move the layout, so demarcation is laid in resin and planned to be re-set.

Fluid-Specific Choice

Hydraulic oil, coolant, brake fluid and solvents behave differently under a resin system.

Static Where Flammable

EN 1081 resistance testing supports conductive specification in paint and solvent areas.

THE LINE DECIDES THE DATE

Installed Into the Shutdown Week

Fast cure resin flooring installed to reduce production downtime

Production sites here release floors during planned breaks rather than on request, so the programme is built backwards from your shutdown and agreed before a system is chosen.

Work is taken cell by cell or bay by bay, with detailing formed up to press bases, jigs and plinths rather than stopping short of them. Where a zone has to be back under load quickly, cure behaviour is set out rather than a completion date promised.

Where polyurethane systems are used, and around paint and solvent areas they frequently are, ISOPA and ALIPA diisocyanate training records apply and every operative holds current REACH certification.

WHAT GOVERNS THE SPECIFICATION

Compliance Themes That Matter in Leyland

Vehicle Segregation

The 1992 Regulations and HSE L24, where marked routes and crossings are part of the floor.

Fluid Resistance

Selection against hydraulic oil, coolants, brake fluid, fuels and solvent-based products.

Bunding and Containment

Containment at 110% of capacity wherever oils, fuels or chemicals are stored on site.

Slip Against Oil

BS 7976 pendulum testing specified for oil rather than water where fluids reach walkways.

NINE SYSTEMS, SPECIFIED AGAINST THE CONDITIONS

Systems Resin Flooring Contractors Leyland Use

FeRFA classifies resin flooring into eight types by build-up and thickness, and BS 8204-6 governs which one a floor actually needs, with EN 13813 for the screed and EN 1504-2 where the concrete is being protected. Polyaspartic and MMA sit outside that classification because they describe the resin chemistry rather than the build-up. In Leyland the fluids and the plant loads decide the type together.

Resin floor seal applied as part of planned resin floor maintenance

Resin Floor Seal

FeRFA Type 1. Two or more coats up to 150 microns, binding a dusting substrate and giving a cleanable surface. From £8 per square metre.

epoxy_and_polyurethane_resin_floor_coating

Epoxy and PU Coating

FeRFA Type 2. Dual component to 300 microns, solvent free, in gloss, matt or silk. Chemical resistance with a decorative finish.

High build resin floor installed by resin flooring contractors

High Build Epoxy

FeRFA Type 3. Up to 1000 microns over prepared concrete and the system specified on most industrial jobs. Takes colour well for demarcation.

multi_layer_epoxy_resin_flooring

Multi-Layer Flooring

FeRFA Type 4. Multi-coat build at 1 to 3mm with aggregate broadcast between coats, for impact and constant wear.

Self-smoothing polyurethane resin floor in a production area

Self-Smoothing Resin

FeRFA Type 5. Flow-applied at 2 to 3mm for a seamless finish where hygiene and cleaning matter more than impact resistance.

Flowable-Flooring

Heavy Duty Flowable

FeRFA Type 7. Three part filled system at 4 to 6mm thickness, giving a self-smoothing finish for heavy and very heavy duty areas.

Heavy duty polyurethane resin screed floor in a factory

Polyurethane Screed

FeRFA Types 7 and 8. Trowel-applied at 6 to 9mm to take thermal shock, steam cleaning and constant heavy forklift traffic.

Fast cure resin flooring installed to reduce production downtime

Polyaspartic

Cures at temperatures down to −5°C and is ready in around two hours. Installed overnight or at a weekend it can remove the need to shutdown entirely.

benefits of epoxy resin flooring

Methacrylate (MMA)

Cures in hours, but the odour can taint food, fabrics and stock and the area must be cleared and ventilated. Better suited to new build and refurbishment projects.

THE NUMBER ON THE QUOTE, AND THE ONE THAT ISN’T

What a Leyland Resin Floor Costs

Rates run from £8 per square metre for a floor seal to £45 for MMA, inclusive of preparation, labour and materials. Paint areas and press bays sit at the upper end, and demarcation schemes are priced separately because they are design work.

One. The Rate You Came to Compare

SystemFeRFAThicknessPer m²
Floor SealType 1Up to 150µmFrom £8
Epoxy and PU CoatingType 2150 – 300µm£8 – £12
High Build CoatingType 3300 – 1000µm£8 – £12
Multi-Layer FlooringType 41 – 3mm£12 – £16
Self-SmoothingType 52 – 4mm£20 – £30
Heavy Duty FlowableType 74 – 6mm£25 – £35
Heavy Duty PU ScreedType 86 – 9mm£30 – £40
PolyasparticChemistry300 – 500µm£38
MMAChemistry2 – 6mm£45

Inclusive of preparation, labour and materials. Rates assume a sound, accessible substrate and are indicative until the floor has been surveyed. Polyaspartic and MMA sit outside the FeRFA type classification because they describe the resin chemistry rather than the build-up.

Two. The Cost of Standing Still

A three day shutdown at a plant turning over £2,000 an hour is £120,000 of lost output. On most sites that is several times the price of the floor.

Five contractors quoted one timber processing plant. All five proposed the same system and a three to four day closure. None of them costed the closure.

We proposed a faster-curing system installed across a weekend. A higher rate per square metre, and no shutdown at all. On the client’s own figures the avoided losses exceeded the price of the floor.

We install evenings, weekends and one bay at a time.

Whether a shutdown costs you thousands an hour or simply gets in the way, you do not always have to close your site for a resin flooring installation.

BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE

Resin Flooring Contractors Leyland: Questions

We work across South Ribble regularly, from Lancashire Business Park at Centurion Way and Moss Side through to Leyland Business Park, the Farington employment area, Titan Way and the trade premises around Hough Lane. We are Cheshire based, so a survey usually happens within days and there is no mobilisation charge for attending.

No, but it should be planned for. Demarcation laid in resin survives the traffic where paint does not, and a scheme designed with line changes in mind can be re-set rather than fought with. It is worth agreeing at specification how routes will be altered when the layout moves.

Whichever ones you use, and they behave differently. Hydraulic oil, coolant, brake fluid, fuels and solvent-based products each attack a system in their own way, so we ask for the inventory and specify against it. EN 1504-2 covers protecting the concrete itself where exposure reaches it.

Solvent resistance, cleanability and, where flammable products are handled, a controlled electrical resistance. EN 1081 gives the test basis for conductive or dissipative floors, and it is specified with a value and an earthing detail rather than described as anti-static.

That is how most production work here is programmed. The sequence is built backwards from your shutdown, taken cell by cell, with detailing formed up to press bases and jigs. We give cure behaviour rather than promising a completion date, because a slipped restart is expensive.

From £8 per square metre for a floor seal up to £45 for MMA, inclusive of preparation, labour and materials. Paint areas and heavy press bays sit at the upper end, with demarcation priced separately. The full table by system is on the cost page.
